{"id":7899,"date":"2025-09-12T23:30:48","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T13:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iwgwomenandsport.org\/?p=7899"},"modified":"2025-09-12T23:31:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T13:31:20","slug":"sport-wales-signs-the-brighton-plus-helsinki-declaration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/ar\/sport-wales-signs-the-brighton-plus-helsinki-declaration\/","title":{"rendered":"Sport Wales Signs the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 data-start=\"208\" data-end=\"324\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Sport Wales Commits to Equal Opportunities for Women and Girls by Signing the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration<\/span><\/h1>\n<p data-start=\"326\" data-end=\"541\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">We are delighted to welcome <strong data-start=\"354\" data-end=\"369\">Sport Wales<\/strong> as the latest signatory of the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration, joining a growing global movement committed to advancing gender equity in sport and physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"764\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">By signing the Declaration, Sport Wales has further demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that women and girls across the nation have equal and equitable opportunities to take part, compete and build careers in sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1426\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Despite progress in visibility and representation at the elite level, women and girls in Wales remain significantly underrepresented in sport and physical activity. Recent data highlights the scale of the challenge:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1955\">\n<li data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1580\">\n<p data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1580\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1437\">57%<\/strong> of women in Wales took part in sport or physical activity in the past month, compared to <strong data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1534\">64%<\/strong> of men. (National Survey for Wales 2022\u201323)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1693\">\n<p data-start=\"1583\" data-end=\"1693\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Only <strong data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1595\">35%<\/strong> of women are active 3+ times a week, versus <strong data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1647\">43%<\/strong> of men. (National Survey for Wales 2022\u201323)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1694\" data-end=\"1836\">\n<p data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1836\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1703\">37%<\/strong> of girls aged 7\u201316 don\u2019t participate in any organised sport outside of PE, compared to <strong data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1798\">33%<\/strong> of boys. (School Sport Survey 2022)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1955\">\n<p data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"1955\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Just <strong data-start=\"1844\" data-end=\"1851\">10%<\/strong> of women in Wales volunteer in sport, compared to <strong data-start=\"1902\" data-end=\"1909\">27%<\/strong> of men. (Wales Activity Tracker April 2025)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1991\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A Shared Commitment to Change<\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2086\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2015\">Tanni Grey-Thompson<\/strong>, Chair of Sport Wales, reflected on the significance of the signing:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2780\">\n<h3 data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2410\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cProgress has been made in some areas during the last couple of decades, certainly in terms of exposure and visibility for women\u2019s elite sport, but participation inequalities still exist. The simple fact is that fewer women and girls participate in sport than men and boys in Wales, and that has been the case forever.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2780\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The gender gap begins in childhood so it\u2019s vital that we get more girls engaged in sport and physical activity from a young age and keep them coming back for more. We are fully committed to supporting the work of our partners within the Welsh sport sector to remove barriers and develop cultures in which women\u2019s sport can be on an equal level to men\u2019s sport.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2782\" data-end=\"2842\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong data-start=\"2782\" data-end=\"2802\">Lisa O\u2019Keefe MBE<\/strong>, Secretary General of the IWG, added:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2844\" data-end=\"3370\">\n<h4 data-start=\"2846\" data-end=\"3173\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cIWG has enjoyed a strong relationship with Sport Wales since the Secretariat moved to the UK back in 2022, so I am delighted we can welcome them as our latest Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration signatories as part of their clear commitment to improving opportunities for women and girls across the country to be more active.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3370\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">A huge thank you to everyone at Sport Wales for their ongoing support of IWG, and I look forward to us continuing this relationship as we head towards the IWG Global Summit in July 2026.\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"3391\" data-end=\"3675\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">By signing the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration, Sport Wales has committed to embedding gender equality into decision-making and policy across all areas of Welsh sport.
