{"id":2950,"date":"2020-04-22T11:56:09","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T01:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iwgwomenandsport.org\/?p=2950"},"modified":"2020-09-04T09:55:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T23:55:06","slug":"iwg-responds-to-covid-19-pandemic-with-global-call-to-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/iwg-responds-to-covid-19-pandemic-with-global-call-to-action\/","title":{"rendered":"ALERT: IWG responds to COVID-19 with global \u2018Call to Action\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt; color: #333399;\"><em><strong>The IWG Global Executive encourages the Brighton Signatories to lead the world by example. <\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">On Tuesday 7 April 2020, an extraordinary meeting of the International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport was held, bringing together the <a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/about\/iwg-global-executive\/\">IWG Global Executive<\/a> from all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">At the meeting, the IWG Global Executive took the position of declaring the COVID-19 pandemic to be a significant threat to the \u2018women in sport and physical activity\u2019 movement, globally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The Executive also agreed the position, given IWG\u2019s alignment and ongoing commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, that COVID-19 has the potential to negatively impact work towards gender equality, worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/womens-sports-likely-to-bear-brunt-of-coronavirus-fallout\/2020\/04\/16\/a9f7856a-7fa8-11ea-84c2-0792d8591911_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read Washington Post commentary on the COVID-19 threat to women\u2019s sport<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-04-16\/coronavirus-threatens-to-halt-momentum-of-womens-sport-australia\/12149624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read ABC&#8217;s analysis of the COVID-19 impact on women\u2019s football codes in Australia<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/un-coronavirus-communications-team\/put-women-and-girls-centre-efforts-recover-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read the United Nations call to put women and girls at the centre of COVID-19 recovery <\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The extraordinary meeting was chaired by IWG Co-Chair for New Zealand, Raewyn Lovett. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Eight of the 13 IWG Global Executive members joined live, including the Regional Representatives from Africa, Asia and Europe, along with the representative from the International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) and Co-Opted Members. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Since this meeting, the remaining members, including the Regional Representatives from the Americas and Oceania and the member from WomenSport International (WSI) have been consulted and agreed with the two positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333399; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><em><strong>Global Call to Action<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG Global Executive has now resolved to issue a global \u2018Call to Action\u2019, encouraging the nearly 600 Signatories to the <a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/brighton-declaration\/\">Brighton plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women &amp; Sport<\/a> to lead the world by example as they recover and rebuild. The Signatories, in signing this treaty, committed themselves to 10 principles ensuring development of a culture that enables and values the full involvement of women and girls in every aspect of sport and physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The 1st Principle of the Brighton + Helsinki 2014 Declaration on Women &amp; Sport reads as follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em> Every effort should be made by state and government to ensure that institutions and organisations responsible for sport and physical activity comply with the equality provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Declaration of Berlin (UNESCO MINEPS V) and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em> Equal opportunity to participate and be involved in sport and physical activity, whether for the purpose of leisure and recreation, health promotion or high performance, is the right of every woman, whatever her race, colour, language, religion, creed, sexual orientation or identity, age, marital status, ability\/disability, political belief or affiliation, national or social origin.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><em> Resources, power and responsibility should be allocated fairly<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> and without discrimination on the basis of sex or gender, but such allocation should redress any inequitable balance in the benefits available to women and men.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG recognises that in the past, sport and physical activity has contributed to awareness and support during\u00a0crisis situations such as Ebola, Cholera and HIV\/AIDS among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/future-development\/2015\/02\/12\/fifa-scores-against-ebola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Read about how Football contributed to affected communities during Ebola<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Signatories are urged to leverage their skills, resources, and networks to contribute relevant responses to support the wellbeing of their female membership and diverse communities in the context of COVID-19 recovery and rebuild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">In particular, the IWG Global Executive is asking Signatories to become active champions for gender equity amongst global peers and to encourage those that have not yet <a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/brighton-declaration\/\">signed up to the Declaration<\/a>, to do so, and to take the opportunity to re-develop organisations to be more inclusive of women and girls and diverse communities as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Ultimately, women and girls make up just over 50% of the world\u2019s population and yet to date, have remained significantly under-represented in all parts of sport and physical activity. With all Signatories in support, IWG believes that COVID-19 crisis could be turned from a negative to a positive opportunity to design an equal future for all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG Global Executive identified five potential areas of concern for women and girls due to COVID-19 and opportunities for Signatories to drive positive change in the future:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Area One: Wellbeing<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Concern:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of women who are currently in \u201clockdown\u201d (experiencing reduced movement).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Opportunity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Area Two: Safety<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Concern:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The emergence of wider social issues, such as widely documented increases in domestic violence globally and economic impacts moving women and girls into poverty, may lead to lower participation in sport and physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cgdev.org\/blog\/gender-lens-covid-19-pandemics-and-violence-against-women-and-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read about the disparate impact of COVID-19 on women and girls<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Opportunity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG asks that Signatories redevelop their business models during recovery with a clear focus on providing safe activity and facilities for female participants and diverse communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Area Three: Resource<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Concern:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The possibility that money and resource may be taken out of women\u2019s sport and physical activity to support men\u2019s sport and physical activity or women\u2019s development may be put aside, as \u201cnot a priority\u201d due to budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/nrlw-in-limbo-after-roosters-withdraw-from-elite-womens-competition-20200329-p54f20.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read about the impact on COVID-19 on the Women\u2019s National Rugby League competition<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Opportunity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG strongly encourages Signatories to plan a recovery phase for both men\u2019s and women\u2019s sport and physical activity in an equitable fashion, reducing spend and resourcing fairly across both areas, and also carefully planning a timeline for the revival of both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Area Four: Leadership<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Concern:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The drive toward stronger diversity at the boardroom table in sport and physical activity may stall, with organisations reverting to the old ways, \u201cout of comfort\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Opportunity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The pandemic has highlighted examples of the value of female leadership in these difficult times and it is a model to follow in sport leadership in the future. The IWG asks Signatories to carefully consider and promote the positive impact that diversity of thought and experience has in helping them successfully face this challenge, and in re-designing the future of their organisation, by including the contribution of women but also diverse communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/14\/asia\/women-government-leaders-coronavirus-hnk-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Read about the emergence of women\u2019s leadership in governmental handling of COVID-19<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt; color: #333399;\"><strong><em>Area Five: Structure<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Concern:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The risk that the sector may seek to \u201cre-build\u201d what was previously there, rather than \u201cre-imagine\u201d the structure to become more inclusive of diverse communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Opportunity:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG encourages Signatories to plan new ways of working that include women and girls and diverse communities safely and equitably. In particular, the IWG believes there is an opportunity for Signatories to assist in \u201cre-imagining\u201d delivery of quality physical education for girls in ALL schools, ALL around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The IWG Global Executive wishes to acknowledge all front-line workers around the world, especially heathcare workers and carers, police, fire and emergency services, for their extraordinary work in fighting the COVID-19 virus globally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Stay safe everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The International Working Group (IWG) on Women &amp; Sport is the <a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/programmes\/iwg-global-network\/\">world\u2019s largest network<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/about\/iwg-strategic-plan\/\">Empowering women and girls \u2013 Advancing Sport<\/a>\u201c.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It is fully aligned to the 17x United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 5: \u201cAchieve gender equality and empower all women and girls\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Established in 1994, the IWG developed and remains guardian of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/brighton-declaration\/\">Brighton plus Helsinki 2014 Declaration<\/a>, which now has nearly 600 signatories.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">The IWG is governed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/old.iwgwomenandsport.org\/es\/about\/iwg-global-executive\/\">IWG Global Executive<\/a>.
