World Wheelchair Rugby: Rewriting the Rules for Women in Sport<\/strong><\/h1>\n

As a committed signatory of the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration, World Wheelchair Rugby (WWR)<\/em> is turning bold ambition into action, championing gender equity through the development of a global Gender Equity Commitment and a powerful new Playbook. In a sport traditionally dominated by men, WWR is changing the narrative, one strategy at a time.<\/p>\n

Tackling inequality with vision and evidence<\/h3>\n

Wheelchair rugby has long been a mixed-gender sport, but until recently, female athletes made up just 10% of participants at national and international levels. Barriers included limited court time, few development pathways, and a culture that often overlooked the needs of women in contact sports.<\/p>\n

In 2023, WWR undertook groundbreaking research to examine the impact of current rules and identify structural inequities. This evidence revealed that high-point female players were disadvantaged by the existing classification bonus system. In response, WWR implemented a rule change in 2024 \u2014 increasing the classification bonus from 0.5 to 1.0 points for high-point female athletes. This technical adjustment is already encouraging more equitable gameplay and participation.<\/p>\n

The Playbook: a practical pathway to progress<\/h3>\n

The Gender Equity Playbook, launched globally on International Women\u2019s Day 2024, is a cornerstone of WWR\u2019s strategy. Designed with input from across its global membership, the Playbook offers practical tools to help national federations and local clubs build inclusive programmes for women and girls.<\/p>\n

The resource is more than a guide, it\u2019s a catalyst for change. It outlines best practices for recruitment, training, visibility, and leadership development. It also equips organisations to challenge gender stereotypes and create new entry points for female athletes.<\/p>\n
